本学年,我校霍艺红老师赴英国惠灵顿中学参加孔子学院项目,开展对外汉语教学,传播中国传统文化。5月17日、18日伦敦大学IOE孔子学院举办了第十届中文年会及孔院揭牌仪式。大会上,霍艺红老师作为中学教师代表(国内单位)作了经验介绍,主要内容是如何结合专长进行中文教学及她自己的收获。报告为全英文,时长4分钟,她流利的英文得到了在场所有人的高度赞扬。下面是霍老师的发言稿,与大家分享:Presentation in the IOE ConferenceBy Yihong HuoI feel honored to introduce our work on behalf of the Hanban teachers of IOE. I come from Beijing No 101 Middle School and now I am working in Wellington College. As a teacher of English, I feel this experience of teaching Chinese in Britain is both new and challenging.Combine culture with language teachingWhilst teaching Chinese, I use my background specialties to combine culture with language teaching, which benefit Chinese learning. When giving oral lessons to the IB and AS students, I found they knew some vocabulary and sentences, but their lack of knowledge about China kept them from speaking and writing more. As a result, besides what I was supposed to teach them, I gave them a lot of information about different aspects of China as supplementary information. As I come from one of the best middle schools in Beijing, I introduced my school to all the Chinese learners in Wellington College. Before I came here, I took a lot of photos of my school as well as the various activities of my students. In this way, the students knew what their counterparts in China are alike. Apart from that, with my own travel experience in China, I showed students a true picture of the country, such as the red leaves in Fragrant Hill, the romantic Hutong in Beijing, the magnificent Yangze River, the spectacular Sunrise in Huangshan and so on. I even wrote some passages on different topics for students’ oral practice. This deepened their understanding of China, which was of equal help to both their oral and writing exams.Design lessons to suit the demands of different learnersOn 25 Feb, 2013, the Conference "Rethinking Modern Foreign Languages Teaching for the 21st Century" was held in Wellington College. MFL teachers, specialists and some head teachers from all over Britain attended this conference. I gave a 30-minute Mandarin taster lesson to all the 80 delegates. Titled the Magic Chinese Characters, my lesson included basic knowledge of Chinese characters along with some activities. This lesson greatly aroused the teachers’ interest in Chinese and they were fascinated by the beauty of the Chinese language.The teachers and parents in Wellington have long wished to learn Chinese. On their request, we started an 8-week Chinese lesson for them. In each one-hour lesson, there will be the introduction of Chinese culture and the teaching of everyday Chinese. There are 20 learners altogether, among whom are the wife of our headmaster, the head of year, the grandfather of a student, the son of a teacher and so on. They really enjoyed learning Chinese and practised a lot.Time flies and the end of this academic year is drawing near. This year we were lucky enough to experience the coldest and longest winter in Britain in the last 50 years, but with the encouragement of each other, the support and help from our cc managers and the IOE Confucius Institute, we are carrying out our work smoothly and successfully. Besides, I think I have learned a lot, having made friends with local teachers and have a better understanding of the British culture.
